Vivactiv Uses

Vivactiv is a medicine used in the treatment of depression. It is used because its active ingredient – protriptyline – belongs to the tricyclic antidepressant class of drugs. The medicine works by decreasing the reuptake of norepinephrine in the brain – meaning more norepinephrine is made available for the brain to use. Greater availability of norepinephrine is linked to lower levels of depression in these patients. Vivactiv may also be used for purposes not listed in this guide, at the discretion of the prescriber.

The dosage of Vivactiv depends on the needs of the patient, and the extent of their pain severity. The dose also depends on whether the patient is taking any additional medications or has an underlying illness.


  • Adult Dose: 15-40mg to be taken in divided doses 3-4 times daily. Maximum permissible dose is 60mg per day.
