Drug Class: Antibiotic, Dihydrofolate Reductase Inhibitors
Treats: Urinary Tract Infections

Trimethoprim is used in the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections. It works as a bacteriostatic antibiotic, meaning that it does not kill bacteria but, instead, slows down the rate of reproduction. This means the body can use its internal defense mechanisms to eliminate the causative organism. The drug is taken orally and should, ideally, be administered on an empty stomach 1 to 2 hours before food. Trimethoprim is known to reduce platelet levels as a consequence of disrupting the synthesis of folic acid.

Trimethoprim Uses

Mechanically, trimethoprim works as a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor. Dihydrofolate reductase is the enzyme required for DNA synthesis in various strains of bacteria. By assaulting the mode of DNA synthesis, trimethoprim can disrupt the rate of reproduction. The drug is typically prescribed by itself or in combination with sulfamethoxazole in the treatment of urinary tract infections. However, given the mechanism of action of the drug, it may be used to battle against various other kinds of aerobic infection.

Trimethoprim Dosage

The dosage is dependent upon the type of infection the patient has, as well as how serious the individual symptoms happen to be. In addition, the dose may be reduced in patients taking drugs that interact with other drugs, such as warfarin. For best results, follow the prescriber"s instructions or, alternatively, consult the local pharmacist.
