Testosterone Replacement

As men age, testosterone levels taper off, and with that change comes some undesirable factors. Researchers continue to study testosterone therapy to weigh the ups and downs of an emerging science. Testosterone is a hormone that is responsible for many characteristics in men, both physical and mental. These include muscle mass, memory and concentration, sex drive, energy levels, bone density and fertility.

Testosterone Replacement Symptoms

Men may begin to experience less sexual desire; sleep disruptions or insomnia; an increase in body fat and reduction in strength; tender or swollen breast tissue; and hot flashes. Testosterone loss can also manifest itself emotionally as a loss of motivation, depression or memory problems.

  • Decrease in sexual desire
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Decrease in sex drive
  • Hair loss
  • Muscle mass loss
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Trouble concentrating

Testosterone Replacement Causes

Low testosterone levels in some men may be to a malfunction of the testicles or pituitary gland, which is a condition called hypogonadism. But the issue will come to all men eventually in one form or another. Testosterone levels generally taper off by about one percent per year after age 30. Researchers are still studying the effects of men who are not experiencing hypogonadism, and are merely suffering from an age-related decline in testosterone production.

Testosterone Replacement Diagnosis

Typically, a medical professional will be able to tell the individual if they are experiencing low testosterone levels. Certain blood tests and measurements will need to be taken to measure the testosterone levels.

Testosterone Replacement Treatment

Doctors can prescribe testosterone as injections, patches or gels, or as small, time-release pellets that are placed under the skin. It has been proven that such therapy has a positive effect for those with hypogonadism, but the jury is still out on how it affects age-related testosterone reduction.
