Soltamox (tamoxifen citrate) is an oral solution used to treat metastatic breast cancer in both women and women. Soltamox is also used to stop the growth of breast cancer in addition to lowering the risk of breast cancer in high-risk women, for instance, women with a history of breast cancer. Soltamox is a nonsteroidal antiestrogen and works by interfering with the effects of estrogen in the breast tissue. Soltamox is primarily used to treat breast cancer in men and women but can also be used to treat other conditions as outlined below:
- Adjuvant treatment of node-positive cancer in postmenopausal women
- Adjuvant treatment of axillary node-negative cancer in women after mastectomy
- Lowering the risk of invasive breast cancer in women after breast surgery and radiation
Soltamox may also be be prescribed for off the label uses to treat certain brain cancers and McCune Albright syndrome, a genetically inherited condition that is associated with causing early puberty in girls.
Soltamox dose is determined by the physician and may differ from one person to the other depending on the seriousness of the condition it is being used to treat. The patient's weight, medical history and the body's ability to tolerate the effects of Soltamox may also determine the dosage. Ensure that you stringently observe the dose as directed by your physician and do not change the dose unless he or she instructs you to.
- For breast cancer, Use 20 to 40 mg on a daily basis. Any dose greater than 20 mg should be used in divided doses.
- For Node-negative cancer, Use 10 mg on a daily basis for at least 5 years
- For ductal carcinoma in Situ, Use 20 mg on a daily basis for years You may take Soltamox with or without food.
Take Soltamox on a regular basis to reap the maximum benefits, particularly when you consider that you may have to use Soltamox for up to 5 years. If a Soltamox dose missed, take it at the earliest opportunity. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the regular schedule. Never take double Soltamox doses.
Soltamox Side Effects
Like most drugs, using Soltamox may bring about side effects. These effects will vary from one patient to the other in terms of severity. While not every patient will experience the side effects, it is important to contact a doctor if the severe effects listed below occur. Common Soltamox side effects:
- Hot flashes
- Mild stomach pain

- Vision problem
- Coughing up blood
- Chest pain
- Loss of appetite
