Silvadene has antimicrobial properties and can help in preventing and treating infections of wounds from serious burns. Silvadene acts on the cell membrane as well as the cell wall to kill the bacteria. Silvadene is applied topically. Before applying the drug, the area should be cleaned and removed of any dead or burned skin. When applying Silvadene, ensure you wear a sterile disposable glove. Ensure you cover the cleaned burned area with about 1/16 inch or approximately 0.2-centimeter thickness of Silvadene cream. If the cream is removed on body by activity or washing, it may be reapplied if necessary. You shouldn"t withdraw the use of the drug if there is possibility of infection, unless a serious side effect occurs.
