Profen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), a derivative of propionic acid used to treat mild to moderate pain, and helps to relieve symptoms of arthritis, such as inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. It exerts its analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory action through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis induced by inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzyme in arachidonic acid cascade.

Profen use is designated for the following medical conditions:
- Analgesic for mild to moderate pain of non-visceral causes, like headache, musculoskeletal pain, and dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps)
- Antipyretic for symptomatic relief of fever due to a variety of causes
- Anti-inflammatory agent in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, rheumatic fever and Dressler's syndrome
In summary, Profen can be used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, menstrual cramps, muscle strains and sprains, back pain, headaches, sore throat, cold and flu, and dental pain. Profen is also used in children below 12 years to relieve fever and pain due to colds, sore throat, ear pain, and immunization.
Your doctor will determine your Profen dosage depending on a number of factors such as weight, medical history, other medical conditions or other medications that you may be using. Profen dosage for pain
- 200-400 mg every 4-6 hours as required. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 1.2 g.
Profen dosage for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis:
- 1.2-3.6 grams/day divided into 3 or 4 equal doses.
- The dose for children is based on body weight and age. Children should not take more than 40 mg/kg daily.
Taking Profen with food or milk reduces gastrointestinal side effects such as heartburn and stomach upset. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it's almost time for the next dosing plan. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
Profen Side Effects
