Priftin Uses

Priftin is a rifamycin antibiotic medication which is mainly used for treating tuberculosis. Priftin works by killing or stopping the growth of TB organisms. It also works by fighting bacteria in the body. Priftin is used along with other medications to treat active tuberculosis in adults and children who are 12 years old and above.

Priftin is also used to keep inactive TB from becoming active in adults and children above 12 years of age. Note that this medication must be used together with other medications to treat tuberculosis. However, Priftin may also be used for other purposes as determined by the doctor. Use this medication exactly as indicated on the label or as prescribed by the doctor.

Priftin Dosage

Priftin dosage is dependent on the user since it is different on different users. The dosage is administered in the form of oral tablets. The dose of Priftin should be administered by direct observation of therapy in combination with daily companion drugs during the initial treatment phase. Read the prescription details on the label or consult the doctor for details. Do not start, stop or change the dosage without consulting the doctor.
Adult Dose for Tuberculosis

  • Oral tablets: 600 mg 2 times per week not less than 72 hours between doses for the first two months
  • Then followed by 600 mg once per week for not less than four months

Pediatric Dose for Tuberculosis
12 years to 15 years:

  • Oral tablets: 450 mg 2 times per week not less than 72 hours between doses for the first two months
  • Then followed by 450 mg once per week for not less than four months

15 years or older:

  • Oral tablets: 600 mg 2 times per week not less than 72 hours between doses for the first two months
  • Then followed by 600 mg once per week for not less than four months

Priftin Side Effects

Priftin may cause a variety of side effects which are dependent on the patient. As well as its needed side effects, this medicine may also cause some unwanted side effects that may require medical attention. However, most of these side effects are caused by overuse or unnecessary use of the medicine. In the event that the following side effects occur, seek medical attention immediately.
