Prialt Uses

Prialt is a non-narcotic pain reliever that is mainly used to treat ongoing pain when other medications cannot control your pain. This medication is used to treat severe chronic pain especially in people who cannot use or do not respond to standard pain-relieving medications.

Prialt works by blocking the nerves in the spinal cord that send pain signals. Prialt decreases an ongoing pain caused by certain diseases such as cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy and other conditions.

However, Prialt may also be used for other purposes as determined by the doctor. Make sure you follow the doctor"s instructions when using Prialt.

Prialt Dosage

Prialt dosage is administered in the form of an intrathecal solution. Prialt is injected, usually continuously, into the spinal fluid using a small pump or as directed by your doctor. Inorder to decrease the risk of side effects, start the treatment slowly and then gradually increase to the best dose for you.

The dose is based on your condition and response to therapy. This medication should not be given intravenously or under the skin. It can cause fainting due to a dangerous drop in blood pressure if it is accidentally given into a vein. consult your doctor for preparation and usage instructions.

Adult Dose for Pain

  • Initial dose: Not more than 2.4 mcg per day or 0.1 mcg per hour by intrathecal administration
  • The dosage should be titrated to patient response.
  • Dosage should be increased in increments of less than 2.4 mcg per day or 0.1 mcg per hour for no more than 2 to 3 times per week.

Geriatric Dose for Pain

  • Initial dose: Not more than 2.4 mcg per day or 0.1 mcg per hour by intrathecal administration
  • The dosage should be titrated to patient response.
  • Dosage should be increased in increments of less than 2.4 mcg per day or 0.1 mcg per hour for no more than 2 to 3 times per week.

Prialt Side Effects

Prialt has various side effects whereby some may be reported while others not. Some of the side effects of Prialt can occur up to 24 hours after you have received the medication. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects.
