Polycidin Uses

Polycidin is an antibiotic that works by stopping the growth and spread of bacteria. Polycidin should be used only as directed. Also, do not wear contact lenses when using Polycidin. Be sure to sterilize the lenses according to manufacturer's directions and consult your doctor before you start using them again. To avoid contamination, you should not touch the tip of the dropper with your hand. Do not let the tip come into contact with your eye or any other surface. Polycidin is only available through a doctor's or pharmacist's prescription and is used to treat:

  • Bacterial eye infections

Polycidin Dosage

Polycidin comes with a medication guide that should be read and understood. Follow the dosage instructions on the product's label. When using Polycidin, apply light pressure to the inside of the eye so that the liquid does not drain down the tear duct. Polycidin dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Below is the typical Polycidin dosage:

  • Apply a½ inch of Polycidin ointment in the affected eye every 3 to 4 hours for 7 to 10 days, depending on the severity of the infection.

If you miss a Polycidin dose, apply as soon as possible. However, if it is time for the second dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the regularly scheduled dose.

Polycidin Side Effects

Polycidin may cause varying side effects as is the case with any other drug. However, some patients may not experience any side effects because of the difference in the body's ability to tolerate the effects of the drug. While common side effects may disappear on their own, severe side effects may not and a doctor's advice should be sought. Common side effects include:

  • Mild pain in the eyes
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Upper stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
