Plegisol Uses

Plegisol is a medicine used to induce cardiac arrest in patients undergoing open heart surgery. During this type of extreme surgery, electrolyte levels need to be controlled to stabilise the patient during surgery. Plegisol is used as it offers a wide variety of electrolytes, which are used for cardiac perfusion purposes only (that is to say, it is not administered intravenously). Plegisol may also be used for purposes not listed in this guide, at the discretion of the surgeon.

Plegisol is used in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Induction of cardiac arrest

Plegisol Dosage

The dosage of Plegisol depends on the needs of the patient, and the extent of their pain severity. The dose also depends on whether the patient is taking any additional medications or has an underlying illness.

Open Heart Surgery

  • Adult Dose: 10mL of sodium bicarbonate injection to be added to 1,000mL of Plegisol solution. To be administered when required during surgery. The solution must be used within 24 hours of preparation.

Plegisol Side Effects

Plegisol, as a cardiac solution, has the potential to cause numerous, clinically significant side effects. Many of these effects are listed below, whose seriousness reflects the dangers of open-heart surgery. Patients may be withdrawn from Plegisol if the risks are deemed higher than the benefits.

Potential side-effects with Plegisol include:

  • Heart attack
  • ECG abnormalities
  • Arrhythmias

Plegisol Interactions

Plegisol is not known to have any major drug interactions. Despite this, clinicians are cognisant of the need to be wary of potential interactions. Plegisol must not, however, be administered to the patient unless combined with 8.4% sodium bicarbonate injection (USP, Hospira List 4,900). The drug may not exert its effects unless this addition is performed.
