While dialysis may remove phosphate from the body, it does not remove enough to keep phosphate levels balanced. Phos Cal is a calcium salt that works by binding onto phosphate from the diet thereby enabling it to pass throughout the body. By lowering blood phosphate, Phos Cal helps your bones stay strong and prevents unsafe accumulation of minerals in the body. This lowers the likelihood of heart disease and strokes caused by high phosphate levels. Do not take Phos Cal without consulting your doctor if you have high blood calcium levels or if you’re taking medications for an irregular heartbeat or seizures. Phos Cal is prescribed for:
- Hyperphosphatemia, due to chronic renal failure.
Phos Cal comes with a medication guide that stipulates the direction of use and dosage. Read the prescription label before using Phos Cal and call your doctor if you have any questions. Do not take Phos Cal more often than directed. Also, contact your doctor regarding the use of Phos Cal in children; special care may be required. The typical Phos Cal dosage is:
- Initial dose: Take 2 tablets orally with every meal.
- Maintenance dose: Take 3 to 4 tablets orally with every meal.
If a Phos Cal dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. However, skip the missed dose and go back to the normal dosage schedule if it's almost time for the subsequent dose.
