Phenhist Uses

Phenhist is a combination drug used as a treatment of various symptoms caused by common cold and other upper respiratory infections. Phenhist is a combination of three medicines - codeine, guaifenesin, and pseudoephedrine. ;

Guaifenesin is the expectorant agent that clears nasal congestion by loosening and thinning mucus in the airways to allow easy breathing. Pseudoephedrine is the decongestant agent in this combination that works by constricting the blood vessels in the nasal passages to reduce nasal congestion. Codeine is the cough suppressant in Phenhist, and it works in the brain to by triggering cough reflex.

Phenhist Dosage

Phenhist must be administered as prescribed by the physician. It can be a sensitive drug if it is not used as per the instructions. Usual adult dosage for cold symptom:

  • Tablet; 1 tablet orally every 4 to 6 hours. Max dose; 6 tablets a day.
  • Liquid; 10 mL orally every 4 to 6 hours. Max dose; 40 mL in 24 hours.

Usual pediatric dosage for;cold symptoms:

  • 2 - 5 years; 2.5 mL orally every 6 hours. Max dose; 10 mL a day.
  • 6 - 12 years; 5 mL orally every 6 hours. Max dose; 20 mL doses a day.
  • 13 and above; adult dosage.
