Phenacon is used primarily as a decongestant to treat allergy. Phenacon is used to treat nasal congestion and to facilitate visualization of the retina as an eye drop to dilate the pupil. Phenacon eye drops are applied to the eye after a topical anesthetic is applied. Allergies cause the lining of your nose to swell. Phenacon is used to shrink swollen blood vessels and tissues thus relieving the congestion. Phenacon may make some people feel jittery or have trouble sleeping.

Phenacon is primarily used to treat allergy conjunctivitis. Allergy conjunctivitis refers to eye inflammation that is caused by an allergic reaction to substances like mold spores, pollen, household dust, animal dander and chemical scents. When one's eyes are exposed to the above substances, they may become itchy, watery and red. These symptoms mean you have allergic conjunctivitis. The conjunctiva is a membrane found inside of your eyelids and the covering of your eyeball. It is your body's reaction to substances it considers potentially harmful. Using Phenacon helps reduce inflammation, itching and nasal congestion.
Phenacon oral is used in treatment of the following:
- Vasomotor Rhinitis
- Allergic Conjunctivitis
- Inflammation of the Nose due to an Allergy
- Non-Seasonal Allergic Runny Nose
The dosage of Phenacon depends on the individual and the condition being treated. Follow directions on the label or as your doctor prescribes. Do not use for longer periods or in smaller or larger amounts than prescribed. Unless advised by a doctor children younger than 4years old use is not recommended.
Shake well before you measure the dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. Ask your pharmacist for a dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup if you do not have one. Below you will find a typical dosage of Phenacon.
Usual Adult Dosage:
- Take 15 mg orally every 6 hours but do not to exceed 60 mg daily.
Usual Pediatric Dosage:;
- 2-5 years: take 3.75 mg orally every 6 hours not to exceed 15 mg daily.
- 6-11 years: take 7.5 mg orally every 6 hours not to exceed 30 mg daily.
- 12 years or older: take 15 mg orally every 6 hours not to exceed 60 mg daily.
Since Phenacon is taken on a dosing schedule, take a missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dose.
Phenacon Side Effects
Phenacon has some side effects just like any other drug. The severity of these side effects may vary from one person to the other depending on the body's ability to handle the effects of the drug. Some people may not experience these side effects at all. Note that this list does not include all possible Phenacon side effects.
Less severe side effects:
- Decreased Sweating
- Excessive Sweating
- False Sense of Well-Being
- Feeling Weak
- Involuntary Quivering
Severe side effects:
- Abnormal Heart Rhythm
- Chronic Trouble Sleeping
- Extra Heartbeat
- Inflammation of Skin caused by an Allergy
- Reaction due to an Allergy
Some drugs and substances may interact with Phenacon and cause severe side effects to your body or may reduce the drug's effectiveness. In most cases, unless authorized by the doctor Phenacon is not combined with other drugs. Thus, do not change, stop or start the use of any medication without informing your doctor. Using Phenacon with the following medicines is not recommended in some cases but may be required.
- Tricyclic compounds
- Solid oral potassium capsules
- Rauwolfia alkaloids
