Pentuss Uses

Pentuss is a combination medication that is formulated to treat various symptoms of the flu, cold, allergies and other upper respiratory infections. This is an antihistamine and a cough suppressant medication that is made by combining two medicines- Chlorpheniramine maleate and codeine.;

Chlorpheniramine maleate is the antihistamine agent in the combination, and it works by reducing the effect of the natural histamine in the body. Histamine is the chemical responsible for allergic reactions like a runny nose and watery eyes. Codeine is the narcotic cough suppressant agent that works in the brain to triggering cough reflex.

Pentuss Dosage

Pentuss must be administered as prescribed by the physician to achieve the expected outcome. Usual adult dosage for:

  • Allergic rhinitis; 5 to 10 mL every 4 to 6 hours. Max dose; 40 mL a day.
  • Cough and nasal congestion; 5 to 10 mL every 4 to 6 hours. Max dose; 40 mL in 24 hours.

Usual pediatric dosage for:

  • Allergic rhinitis; 6-11 years; 2.5 to 5 mL orally every 4 to 6 hours. Max dose; 20 ml a day. 12 years and above; Adult dosage.
  • Nasal and cough congestion; 6 - 11 years; 2.5 to 5 mL orally every 4 to 6 hours. Max dose; 20 ml a day. 12 years and above; Adult dosage.
