Nitroimidazole antibiotics are classified with respect to the location of the nitro functional group. The 5- and 4-Nitroimidazole are equal from the perspective of drugs, and this is majorly because these tautomers freely interconvert. Drugs of the 5-nitroimidazole variety are the Nimorazole, Tinidazole, 6-Amino PA 824, Dimetridazole, Megazol, Ornidazole and the Azandazole. Drugs of the 2-nitro include Benznidazole and the Tinidazole.

Nitroimidazole antibiotics are applied in the treatment of amoebiasis, parasitic infections, skin infections, diarrhea, meningitis, bacterial vaginosis, rosacea, gastrointestinal infections, bacterial infections and the lower respiratory infections.
The antibiotics work by killing the bacteria triggering the infection. The antibiotic stops the growth of protozoa and bacteria. This antibiotic does not work for viral infections for instance flu or the common cold. Overuse or unnecessary use of any antibiotic can cause the decrease in their effectiveness.
Metronidazole is also applied in combination with anti-ulcer medications in order to cure given types of stomach ulcers.

Some of the common side effects of Nitroimidazole Antibiotics include:
- Loss of appetite
- Dry mouth
- Stomach pain
- Changes in taste
Serious Side Effects to inform the doctor about:
- Mood changes
- Tingling of feet
- Tingling of hands
- Painful urination

This drug might cause urine to be dark in color, but this is not harmful to an individual.
