Methadone HCl belongs to a class of drugs referred to as narcotic analgesics. It is sometimes called an opioid medication. The drug is used for two main indications that are related: as a pain reliever, which is usually applied for addiction detoxification during a program to assist patients who are fighting heroin and other narcotic addiction, and to reduce withdrawal symptoms in those addicted.
Methadone HCl is best suited for those patients who want to stop a heroin addiction because it does not cause the "high" that is associated with many narcotic addictions.
Patients with a history of breathing problems, severe asthma or paralytic ileus are advised not to take Methadone HCl.
