Ketoprofen Uses

Ketoprofen reduces the chemicals known as cyclo-oxygenase or COX enzymes that help in making other chemicals known as prostaglandins. When COX enzymes are reduced, it means fewer prostaglandins are produced at the site of damage or injury, which further eases inflammation and pain. This drug may be combined with another medication known as omeprazole to prevent stomach irritation, which is a common side effect.

Ketoprofen treats pain associated with different diseases and health conditions such as:

  • arthritis
  • gout
  • sprains and strains
  • menstrual cramps
  • and post-operative pain.

It may also treat pain induced by

  • headaches
  • toothaches
  • backaches
  • muscle aches
  • the common cold

This drug may reduce excretion of lithium in the body by the kidney, which may elevate the levels of this substance thus causing toxicity. The drug may also reduce effects of blood pressure medications. Patients taking blood thinners may want to avoid ketoprofen because it also thins blood and may cause excessive thinning of blood leading to bleeding.
