Hydrea is an antineoplastic chemotherapy drug used in patients with various kinds of cancer. This medication is used to treat different types of cancers namely myelogenous leukemia, ovarian cancer, melanoma and a type of head and neck cancer. Hydrea treats cancer by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells in your body.

Hydrea is used to reduce the need for blood transfusions and to reduce the number of painful crises caused by sickle cell anemia. This medication is used to treat cancers like ovarian cancer that is resistant to standard therapy, chronic myeloid leukemia, which is a type of cancer of the white blood cells, and head and neck cancer with radiotherapy. Similarly, this drugs can be used to cure polycythemia Vera and thrombocytosis. Hydrea treats cancer by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells in a patients' body. It also prevents the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells when treating sickle cell anemia.
Below you will find the basic dosage that is used by health care providers. All dosage is based on the patient's ideal or an actual weight. Hydrea should be administered seven days before initiation of irradiation and used during radiotherapy as well. Additionally, it should be used afterward so long as the patient is kept under observation, and there are no severe reactions.
- For solid tumors, intermittent therapy 80mg/kg administered as a single dose every third day
- Continuous Therapy20 to 30 mg/kg orally as a single dose every day
- Concomitant Therapy with irradiation
- Head and neck cancer administer 80mg/kg orally as a single dose every third day
Hydrea Side Effects
Hydrea, like any other drug, has the needed and unwanted effects. Some of the serious allergic reactions that need medical help include hives, swelling of the face, tongue, lips or throat.
These side effects should be reported to your doctor:
- sores in the mouth or throat
- body aches
- unusual bleeding (from nose
- rectum) pale skin
- rep or purple pinpoints under the skin
- skin redness
- skin ulcers
