The three components of Hydrap-Es work differently to lower blood pressure and treat edema. Hydralazine lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels thereby making it easier for the heart to pump blood. Hydralazine belongs to a class of drugs known as vasodilators.
The hydrochlorothiazide in Hydrap-Es helps lower the patient's blood pressure and reduce edema by increasing the amount of salt and water lost through the urine. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic.
Reserpine, the other part of Hydrap-Es works by reducing the levels of a certain chemical in the blood. This in turn allows the blood vessels to relax and the heart to beat more easily and slowly. Hydrap-Es is typically indicated for:
- High blood pressure
The dosage for Hydrap-Es is determined by the doctor. The doctor may base an individual dose using on factors such as the patient's weight, age, medical history and response to treatment. The amount of Hydrap-Es to be used is dependent on the strength of the drug. To help increase its effectiveness, avoid missing any doses. Also, take doses at an interval of 12 hours; in the morning and at night unless otherwise directed by the doctor. Below is a typical Hydrap-Es dosage:
- Initial dose: 1 tablet orally once every 24 hours
- Maintenance dose: 1 to 2 tablets every 24 hours in 1 to 2 divided doses
A missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. If it is about time for the second dose, the missed dose should be skipped and normal dosage returned to.
