Chlorpheniramine and pyrilamine (mepyramine) are antihistamines and important components of Histatan. They are antihistamines that act by inhibiting the action of a naturally produced chemical substance known as histamine. Histamine is released by the body in the case of an allergic reaction and induces certain effects like sneezing, coughing, and a running nose. Pyrilamine and chlorphenamine act by inhibiting the H1 histamine receptor. They actively bind to these receptors that are located in capillaries, bronchi and smooth muscles.
Phenylephrine acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist. It mimics the action of epinephrine and binds to the adrenergic receptors causing vasoconstriction. This will decongest the nasal passage. Histatan can be used to treat the following conditions
- Stuffy nose
- Watery eyes
- Sinus congestion
