Hexatussin Uses

Hexatussin is a combination medication that temporarily relieves the allergy, cold, and other breathing illnesses symptoms. It is a combination of three medicines including chlorpheniramine, hydrocodone and pseudoephedrine.  It is a decongestant, cough suppressant and an antihistamine drug. 

Pseudoephedrine works as a decongestant agent in this combination that works by shrinking the blood vessels and thus treating the nasal congestion. Hydrocodone if the cough suppressant agent that works in the brain to decrease cough reflex thus reducing a dry cough. Chlorpheniramine is the antihistamine that relieves itchy/watery eyes, sneezing, itchy throats and other allergic symptoms.

Hexatussin Dosage

Hexatussin dosage needs to be administered as directed by the manufacturer. The physician should determine the dosage if there are no manufacturer directions. Usual adult dosage for a cough and nasal congestion:

  • 2-5 years; 2.5 mL orally every 4 60 6 hours. Maximum dose, ten mL
  • 6-11 years; 5 mL orally four times a day. Maximum dose; 20 mL.
  • 12 years and above; 10 mL orally four times a day. Maximum dose; 40 mL.
