The clinical term for this infection is tinea pedis, which translates to fungal infection of the feet, which is a very common kind of infection. The fungi thrive in warm and wet environment, examples of which are socks, shoes, pools, and public showers.

Although signs and symptoms of this kind of infection may vary from person to person, general symptoms would include any of the following:

  • Cracking and flaking of the skin on the foot
  • Growth of reddish blisters on the affected area
  • Itchiness
  • Burning sensation on the affected area

There are three main causes of a skin infection.

  • Bacteria: Bacteria is the main cause for most types of skin infections as it can cause the largest variety of skin infections.
  • Viruses: Examples of viral infections include poxvirus, human papillomavirus, and herpes simplex virus.
  • Fungi: Yeast infections are a prime example of a fungal skin infection.

In order to properly diagnose a skin infection, the patient will need to consult a doctor immediately. From there, the patient may need to have a medical exam complete with a culture of the skin cells in order for the physician to properly treat the skin ailment.

The treatment of a skin infection solely depends on the type of infection that exists. However, the following is usually prescribed for most patients as a form of basic treatment to cure the skin infection.

  • Intravenous medication
  • Anti-inflammatories for pain or discomfort
  • Over the counter antihistamines
  • Cold compresses for itching and inflammation
  • Topical creams or ointments
