Habitrol Uses

Habitrol is a medical product which is mainly used to aid in smoking cessation especially in adults. A controlled amount of nicotine is used to help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms when one quits smoking. 

Habitrol contains nicotine gum and lozenges. Habitrol helps you quit smoking by replacing the nicotine in a cigarette. When you quit smoking, the nicotine levels drop quickly thus causing withdrawal symptoms, for example, craving tobacco, nervousness, irritability, headache and difficulty concentrating. You should consult the doctor first before using this medication. 

However, Habitrol may also be used for other conditions as determined by the doctor.

Habitrol Dosage

Habitrol dosage is administered through nasal spray or inhalation device. The dosage is dependent on the user since it is different for different patients. Read all directions on the product package before using this medication. You should start this medication immediately after quitting smoking. In case you have any questions, consult your doctor.


Adult Dose for Smoking Cessation
Habitrol:

  • 21 mg per day for 6 weeks, then 14 mg per day for 2 weeks
  • followed by 7 mg per day for 2 weeks.

Prostep:

  • 22 mg per day for 4 to 8 weeks, then 11 mg per day for 2 to 4 weeks.

Nicorette gum:

  • 4 mg piece every 1 to 2 hours for 6 weeks
  • then 4 mg piece every 2 to 4 hours for 3 weeks
  • then 4 mg piece every 4 to 8 hours for 3 weeks. Do not use more than 24 pieces per day. 
  • Chew gum slowly for at least 30 minutes

Nicotrol Inhaler:

  • 6 to 16 cartridges per day for 3 months.
  • Then, gradually reduce daily dose and taper patient off the inhaler over the next 6 to 12 weeks.

Along with its needed side effects, this medicine can cause unwanted side effects when used for a long time than recommended or when overused.
