Griseofulvin Uses

Griseofulvin is an antifungal drug used in the treatment of a wide array of infections. It may be used to treat, for example, tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea barbae, tinea capitis and tinea corporis. In effect, griseofulvin is used to treat external fungal infections irrespective of their location on the body. Griseofulvin is used as an oral dosage form, and works by sabotaging the structural architecture that makes up individual fungal cells, destroying their biological integrity in the process. Griseofulvin may also be used for purposes not listed in this guide, at the discretion of the prescriber.

  • Onychomycosis
  • Tinea Pedis
  • Tinea Barbae
  • Tinea Capitis

Griseofulvin Interactions

Drug interactions occur not only with prescription medications, but also with over-the-counter products and preparations. This is why patients are advised to inform their doctor if they are taking any non-prescription items, including herbal remedies and supplements, as these may interact with the functioning of griseofulvin. A list of common drug interactions can be found below, though this is by no means intended to be a complete list. In addition, alcohol should be avoided while taking griseofulvin. Patients are also advised to consume a fatty meal with griseofulvin as this enhances absorption of the drug into the body. Drugs that interact with griseofulvin include:
