Gramicidin D belongs to a group of antibiotics. This medication is mainly used to treat bacterial infections. The ophthalmic form of this medication is mainly used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes. Gramicidin D works by stopping the growth of sensitive bacteria and killing bacterial infections of the eye.
However, this medication does not work for other types of eye infections but only treats bacterial eye infections. Gramicidin D may also be used for other purposes as determined by the doctor. Do not use this medication in case you are allergic to it or any ingredient in it. Note that unnecessary use of this medication may lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Gramicidin D Dosage
Gramicidin D dosage is used for treating and preventing the growth of bacteria or bacterial infection. Dosage varies with the age of the patient and it is also different for different patients. The dose depends on the strength of the medicine. You avoid overuse or unnecessary use since the medicine can become ineffective. Dosage is administered in the form of ophthalmic drops.
How to use Gramicidin D
- When applying eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface.
- Do not wear contact lenses while you are using this medicine.
- Ophthalmic: Instill 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye every 4 hours for 7 to 10 days.
- In severe infections, the dosage may be increased up to 2 drops every hour.
Note: This medication is for ophthalmic use only. Not for use in the ears or on the skin.
Gramicidin D Side Effects
Gramicidin D has various side effects whereby some of them are needed while some are unwanted. The unwanted side effects should be reported to the doctor. Side effects are brought by unnecessary use or overusing the medicine. Note that using this medication for a prolonged or repeated period may result in a new fungal eye infection.
