Glucostix Uses

Glucostix is only used if you have diabetes and want to keep your glucose level in check. Through the help of your doctor, you can use the results of the test to determine your daily adjustment in treatment and know if you have dangerously high or low levels of glucose. Additionally, you will understand how your diet and exercise affect your glucose levels. Note that you may get information about your meter (remember that Glucostix is used with a meter) from several sources including the manual that comes with your meter or manufacturer's website. Glucostix is used for the following:

  • Monitor blood glucose
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes

Glucostix Dosage

Before using Glucostix to test your glucose, you must read and understand the instruction for your meter. Typically, you prick your finger using a lancet to get a drop. You will then place the blood drop on Glucostix before inserting it into your meter. Note that Glucostix may contain chemicals that may react with glucose.

  • Your doctor will determine how often you will be using Glucostix to test your glucose. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may need to test yourself a couple of times every day to determine the adjustments in your diet or treatment. The results are in milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood

Glucostix Side Effects

Glucostix is used on the skin's surface and thus may not cause any side effects. However, using Glucostix involves pricking the skin to draw a blood sample. It is, therefore, important to ensure that the pricking needles are sterilized before use to avoid contamination. To ensure that you get the best possible results, do not use Glucostix if:

  • You think your blood sugar is low
  • You are not aware of symptoms when you become hypoglycemic
  • You are under stress
  • You have just taken insulin
  • You have just eaten
  • The results do not agree with the way you feel
  • You have just exercised
  • You are ill

Glucostix Interactions

Glucostix in its very nature may not interact with any substances or drugs, primarily because it is used outside the body. However, its formulation may interact with glucose or the liquid in the meter and affect the overall reading. You should thus ensure that the liquid control solution in the meter is not beyond the expiry date. Remember that the accuracy of the test depends on some factors such as:

  • How well you perform the test, for instance, you should wash and dry your hands before carrying out the test
  • Your hematocrit (number of red blood cells in your blood)
  • Interfering substances such as Vitamin C, Tylenol, and Uric acid
  • Attitude, temperature, and humidity
