Emend is generically known as aprepitant and falls under a group of drugs known as Miscellaneous antiemetics. Emend is used to prevent nausea and vomiting. Due to its complex chemical structure, Emend is contraindicated for patients undergoing therapy involving drugs such as Propulsid or Orap. Such drugs may interact with Emend and cause threatening side effects to the patient. Moreover, Emend can make birth control pills less effective therefore resulting g in pregnancy, it is therefore important not to take Emend alongside pregnancy pills as well.
Emend is a drug prescribed together with other medications to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy (cancer drug treatment). This drug is also indicated for the prevention of nausea and vomiting after surgery. Emend is in a class of medicines called P antagonists.
The drug works by restraining the activity of a natural substance produced by the body called P/neurokinin 1 that triggers vomiting. Emend will not reduce the intensity of nausea or vomiting that has already started.
To prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, be sure to take this medication one hour before the onset of chemotherapy. If you are not receiving chemotherapy, take Emend once every day in the morning.
