Easivent is a holding chamber that has a valve and is used to assist in the delivery of inhalation medication for asthma patients. It is used together with metered dose inhalers (MDIs) for delivery of aerosol medication. With the valved holding chamber, it makes it easier for patients to use their MDIs.
The most important aspect that allows Easivent to be a crucial component in the treatment of asthma is that it selectively removes large particles that are usually deposited in the mouth. Therefore, it allows smaller particles to get through to the lungs for maximum effectiveness. One of the problems that have been associated with treatment of asthma has been the inability to use the MDIs.
Easivent is a spacer used with metered dose inhalers for effective delivery of nasal inhalation drugs. The dosage can be prescribed for a drug like Ventolin. It is also known as albuterol sulfate inhalation aerosol. It is designed for general inhalation only. Each dosage contains a suspension of microcrystalline in the propellant of albuterol sulfate.
- The inhaler delivers 120mcg of albuterol sulfate for every actuation.
- In episodes of acute bronchospasm, the general dosage to both children and adults is two inhalations that should be repeated every 4 to 6 hours.
- Depending on the patient, a single inhalation after a four-hour interval is sufficient.
Inhaling large quantities of the drug is not advised
Easivent Side Effects
Side effects of Ventolin may vary with the individual because of factors like age and physical condition. Effects recorded from controlled placebo clinical research are different from those recorded in practice. Side effects related to the use of Ventolin include:
- upper respiratory inflammation
- throat irritation
- viral respiratory infections
- musculoskeletal pain
Adverse reactions recorded by less than 3% of all reported cases include:
- oropharyngeal edema
- dizziness and palpitation
- lung disorders.
These effects manifest in equal measure to children above 4 years and to adolescents and adults. Ventolin HFA has not been used for infants up to 48 months of age.
Patients with asthma should not be treated with beta-blockers. Receptor blocking agents of beta-adrenergic may block the pulmonary effect of Ventolin HFA (beta agonist) and may also lead to acute bronchospasm in asthma patients. But in some cases, cardioselective beta-blockers can be considered. For example in a case prophylaxis caused by a myocardial infarction. Careful examination before administering a non potassium-sparing diuretics to an asthma patient on Ventolin medication. The ECG changes produced by diuretics can be severely worsened. The doctor is advised to keep on monitoring the levels of potassium in the patient. It can also react with tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors and digoxin.
