Delsym Uses

Delsym is a common over-the-counter cough suppressant medication, typically available as an oral solution. Delsym suppresses the patient's need to cough, which provides effective relief from repetitive coughing. Unfortunately, it's not effective in treating long-term coughs caused by smoking or long-term breathing products. Delsym is most effective and least dangerous when used in the short-term to treat coughs caused by conditions such as sinusitis and the common cold. However, it does not treat other symptoms of these conditions and will not cure or shorten the length of minor illnesses. Delsym should also not be used in children under 6 years old.

Delsym Dosage

All doses should be measured precisely to avoid possibility of overdose. Shake the bottle before measuring. Exact dosage depends upon factors like age and weight.
  • However, the average dose for adults and children 12 years or older is between 10 mg and 30 mg taken every 4 to 8 hours.
  • Children between 7 and 12 generally require doses between 5 mg and 10 mg taken every 6 to 8 hours. This medication should not be used for children 6 and younger.
Delsym is also available in an extended-release variety that needs to be taken less frequently.
