Triazolam is a benzodiazepine. It functions by depressing the central nervous system causing drowsiness to help aid in falling asleep. Triazolam possesses pharmacological properties similar to that of other benzodiazepines drugs, but it is usually only used as a sedative to cure severe insomnia. Apart from the hypnotic properties triazolam has, sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant properties are also present. Because of its short half-life, triazolam is not effective for patients that suffer from early wakening or frequent awakenings. Triazolam is a drug used in the treatment of insomnia. It belongs to the benzodiazepine class of sedative drugs - working by enhancing the effects of GABA on the GABA-A receptor. GABA is important in this regard as it's the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Triazolam is used in the short-term treatment of insomnia; it may not be given for long-term insomnia. One of the reasons for this is that triazolam - as a benzodiazepine - is associated with dependence. Some patients also become tolerant to the effects of benzodiazepines, meaning more drug is required to retain the same effect. Common side effects with triazolam include dizziness, headache, fatigue, loss of coordination, and daytime drowsiness.
