Tobrex, generic name tobramycin, belongs to a class of drugs known as Ophthalmic anti-infectives. Tobrex is used for treating eye infections. Tobrex is an antibiotic and generally functions by killing or slowing down the growth of certain types of bacteria in the body of a patient. Patients should not use Tobrex in case they are allergic to any ingredient found in this medication.
Tobrex is a sterile topical ophthalmic medication prepared specifically for topical therapy of external ophthalmic infections. Tobrex belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Tobrex contains inactive ingredients such as boric acid, sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, tyloxapol, sodium hydroxide and purified water. Tobrexs’ pH ranges from 7.0-8.0 and an osmolality of 260-320 mOsm/kg. Tobrex is soluble in water.
Tobrex is mainly used in the treatment of bacterial eye infections. Tobrex works by slowing or killing the growth of specific types of bacteria. Tobrex can only treat bacterial eye infections and will not work for other types of eye infections. Underuse or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its less effectiveness.
