Memantine is a drug that is used to treat dementia as a result of moderate to severe Alzheimer's. It works by suppressing the action of a substance called glutamate. Memantine is hence able to slow down the progression of Alzheimer's, but not cure it completely. It increases a patient's ability to think and remember details, and it also helps the patient go about day to day activities. Although it treats moderate to severe Alzheimer's, it can be taken by patients suffering from the condition but who cannot take other medication meant for it, for one reason or another.
Memantine Hcl is used to treat severe to moderate dementia caused by the Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine Hcl does not treat Alzheimer’s, but it improves memory, awareness thereby increasing the patient’s ability to carry day to day tasks. Memantine Hcl belongs to a class of drugs known as NMDA receptor antagonists.
Memantine Hcl works by hampering the activities of a certain substance that occurs naturally in the brain known as glutamate. Glutamate is associated with the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Memantine Hcl may be taken with or without food as directed by the doctor.
