Maxzide (triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide) is a potassium-sparing diuretic whose main function is to get rid of excess fluid in the body amid reducing potassium loss in the process. Potassium is an important mineral in the body and its levels must be maintained. Maxzide does this by blocking epithelial sodium channel on the collecting tubules of the kidneys. This in turn facilitates sodium excretion while reducing potassium loss. This drug is effective in the management of edema and hypertension.
