Ibandronate Sodium is available in the form of tablets as well as injections. They are administered either through mouth or directly into the veins (intravenous). It prevents osteoclast activities and decreases the bone resorption and the turnover in postmenopausal women by reducing the elevated bone turnover rate, which leads to on average, net gain in the bone mass. It is available as a solution for injections (3 mg/ 3 ml in a pre filled single use syringes and film-coated tablets of 2.5 mg and 150 mg). Ibandronate sodium is a white- to off-white powder tablet for once-monthly oral administration and is practically insoluble in organic solvents and freely soluble in water. Ibandronate Sodium belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates. Ibandronate sodium contains the following number of inactive ingredients: povidone, lactose monohydrate, crospovidone, microcrystalline cellulose, and purified stearic acid. Ibandronate sodium is used in the prevention and treating of certain types of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases after menopause, as you age, or if you take any corticosteroid medications for long periods. Ibandronate sodium works by slowing bone loss to help in maintaining strong bones and decreasing the risk of broken bones.
