Haloperidol is a medicine which belongs to the class of drugs known as antipsychotics. The medicine is used to treat schizophrenia, motor and verbal tics in Tourette syndrome, severe anxiety, certain mood disorders, negative thoughts, explosive or aggressive behaviour and hyperactive children who cannot be treated with psychotherapy or other medications. Haloperidol works by balancing the chemicals present in the nerve cells, specifically the dopamine and serotonin type 2 receptors, which stop the nerve cells from being activated and producing the symptoms of the disease. However, the exact working of this antipsychotic drug is still not known.
Haloperidol is used to treat mental disorders such as schizophrenia. It is also used in controlling Tourette disorder’s symptoms. Haloperidol is a psychotic agent that works by blocking certain natural substances or chemicals in the brain that are responsible for causing schizophrenia. It is also believed to work by balancing the chemical substances in the brain. It helps the patient to start thinking clearly and feel less nervous. Haloperidol can also be used in people having suicidal thoughts and are likely to harm themselves. It can also be used to decrease aggression and the strong desire to hurt others. It is supplied as an oral tablet, injectable solution or intramuscular solution.
