Fenofibrate is a drug used in the treatment of high cholesterol levels or hypercholesterolemia. It reduces the harmful types of cholesterol (LDL and VLDL) and increases the healthy type of cholesterol (HDL). It belongs to a class of drugs known as fibrates, which are often used alongside statins in patients with cardiovascular disease.
Fenofibrate is used together with a doctor-approved diet and exercise program to reduce “bad” (LDL) cholesterol and fats such as triglycerides in the blood. Fenofibrate also raises “good” (HDL) cholesterol in the blood.
Fenofibrate works by increasing the production of a particular enzyme that occurs naturally in the body to break down fats in the blood. Fenofibrate is in a class of medicines called fibrates.
By reducing bad cholesterol and raising good cholesterol, Fenofibrate lowers the risk of other conditions such as the pancreas disease. Despite breaking fats in the blood, Fenofibrate may not reduce the possibility of heart attack or stroke.
