Contrave is a prescription drug that acts on the brain to suppress appetite and therefore used for chronic weight management in those who are overweight or suffer from chronic obesity. The medicine is composed of two active ingredients - bupropion and naltrexone - the former of which is used as an antidepressant. Despite this, Contrave is only licensed for use in treating obesity and not depression.
Contrave (bupropion and naltrexone) is a combination medicine that helps in weight management. Bupropion is the antidepressant drug in this combination that lowers or decreases the appetite. It helps in reducing the amount of food consumed daily. Naltrexone is the agent that blocks the effects of alcohol or narcotics in people with addiction problems.
For these properties to kill an addiction, naltrexone helps in curbing food cravings that are mostly blamed for obesity. Contrave should only be used in adult patients fighting obesity or overweight. Patients with hypertension, seizures and kidney failure should not use this medicine. Contrave is mostly supplied in the form of tablets. It should be administered orally and be swallowed with a plenty of water.
