Combivent Respimat (albuterol, ipratropium) is an inhaled medication used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The combination drug acts as a bronchodilator to help increase airflow to the lungs. Combivent Respimat is used with a regular aerosol bronchodilator. Combivent Respimat is a combination medicine used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). More specifically, the medicine is used to prevent bronchospasm - a symptom that renders it difficult for the patient to breathe. The medicine has two active ingredients - albuterol and ipratropium - each of which plays a complementary role in the prevention of bronchospasm. For example, albuterol is a beta-2 agonist, meaning it enhances the effects of beta-2 receptors located on the lung (expanding airway potential). In contrast, ipratropium blocks acetylcholine receptors (acetylcholine being responsible for muscle contraction). Possible side effects with Combivent Respimat include mild headache and cold-like symptoms. Some patients experience low potassium levels, eye pain, high blood pressure, chest pain, and wheezing.
