Azithromycin, the generic version of Zithromax, is a prescription macrolide antibiotic of the azalide group. It works by disrupting protein synthesis inside bacterial cells, ultimately leading to dysfunction and death. Azithromycin also treats gastrointestinal infections, bronchitis, ear infections, conjunctivitis and whooping cough. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and headache. Azithromycin is an antibiotic medication that can treat a broad range of bacterial infections. It can treat many conditions such as skin infections, sexually transmitted diseases, respiratory infections, and ear infections. Some of the diseases that Azithromycin treats includes pneumonia, sinusitis, Legionella pneumonia, cervicitis among many others. Azithromycin works by killing or inhibiting the growth of the bacteria causing the infection. It limits the production of more bacteria and kills the active ones on the affected part to treat the conditions. Azithromycin should not be used in patients that have ever been diagnosed with jaundice or liver problems. A headache, chest pain, diarrhea, severe dizziness and loss of appetite are some of the side effects of Azithromycin.
