Azasan (Azathioprine), an immunosuppressive drug belongs to the pharmacological class of purine antimetabolite, is often prescribed in various organ transplantation and autoimmune diseases. Available as a pro-drug, it is rapidly converted to mercaptopurine which then acts by inhibiting an enzyme required for DNA synthesis. It lowers body immune function by suppressing the proliferation of T and B lymphocytes. Azasan is an oral prescription drug that belongs to Category D, hence it shows significant teratogenic effect and is not safe to be administered during pregnancy.
