Atovaquone is a combination medication that is used for the prevention and treatment of malaria. The drug is mostly used in places or countries where malaria is common and mostly to visitors touring the area. It can also be administered as a vaccine. For malaria treatment, atovaquone is a selective inhibitor of the mitochondrial parasite, killing the protozoan parasite causing malaria. Proguanil chloride disrupts the deoxythymidylate synthesis of the malaria parasite thus making it weak to cause a fever. Atovaquone works by killing the malaria parasite residing inside red blood cells. It can also be used to cerebral malaria and other complicated malaria cases such as the pulmonary edema. Atovaquone is supplied in the form of tablets and should be administered orally with plenty of water.
