Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic medication that is used to treat a broad range of bacterial infections. Some of the bacterial infections that Amoxicillin can treat includes bronchitis, gonorrhea, and infections of the urinary tract, nose, skin ear or throat. The drug may also be combined with other medicines such as Biaxin to treat stomach ulcers caused by the pylori infections.
Amoxicillin works by killing the bacterial cells causing infection and also inhibits the growth and multiplication of these cells. In other infections such as the eye infection, Amoxicillin stops the production of a protein that the bacteria feed on thus starving them to death. The drug may be supplied as a suspension, tablets or capsules and should be taken by mouth.
