Acanya Gel is a topical drug that treats severe acne in adults and children over age twelve. It's a combination of 1.2 % clindamycin phosphate and 2.5% benzoyl peroxide -- Benzoyl peroxide has an antibacterial effect while Clindamycin is an antibiotic that inhibits bacteria from growing on the skin. Acanya is non-alcoholic and water-based, too. However, this medicine is not yet available in generic forms and requires a prescription. The best results are seen after twelve weeks of use. Acanya is a medicine used in the treatment of bacterial infections. Specifically, Acanya is used to treat acne. It has two active ingredients. They are benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin. Benzoyl peroxide is used to prevent excessive dirt build-up on the skin. It also has an antibacterial effect, but it's through clindamycin that the medicine exerts its true antibacterial effect. Clindamycin is a protein synthesis inhibitor. It is bacteriostatic, meaning it does not actively kill cells but, instead, limits their growth. Taken together, benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin, in the form of Acanya, is applied to the affected area as a gel. Common side effects with Acanya include mild burning, itching, redness, and dryness.
