Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet drug used in the treatment of conditions where there is likelihood of thrombosis. Patients who have recently suffered a heart attack and who, as a consequence, received a stent in their coronary artery, would be the type of candidate to receive clopidogrel. This drug is also used as a prophylaxis against conditions such as heart attack, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
Clopidogrel is used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is mostly administered to patients that already had a stroke or heart attack before. Since the main causes of the two mentioned conditions are narrowing and hardening of the arteries, Clopidogrel works on reducing these factors.
Clopidogrel works by slowing or stopping the platelets from sticking on the walls of the blood vessels. This reduces the chances of artery hardening and thus the heart attack or stroke. Some of the conditions that Clopidogrel can treat are an acute coronary syndrome, ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction among others. It is supplied in the form of a solution, and it should be administered orally.
