Brofed Uses

Brofed is a combination of drugs such as antihistamine, decongestant, and cough suppressant. These three drugs work differently to help in the treatment of such infections. As a decongestant, Brofed works by constricting the blood vessels that reduces swelling in the nasal passage. As an antihistamine, it works by blocking the chemical substance histamine responsible for watery eyes and the runny nose. As a cough suppressant, Brofed works in the brain to decrease the cough reflex that reduces a dry cough. Brofed is used to relieve symptoms due to:

  • colds
  • allergies
  • upper respiratory infections

Such symptoms include:

  • sinus congestion
  • runny nose
  • sneezing
  • cough

Brofed Dosage

You will find below the dosage guidelines of Brofed that doctors use, but depending on the medical history and the medical condition of the patient, a pharmacist or a doctor may prescribe a different regimen for Brofed. Adult dose

  • Cough and nasal congestion: 10 mL or 5 to 10 mL orally every 4 to 6 hours to a maximum of 40 mL per day. Or 5 mL orally twice a day to a maximum of 10 mL per day

Pediatric dose

Cough and nasal congestion:

  • 6 to 11 years: 5 mL orally 4 to 6 times a day
  • 2 to 5 years: 2.5 mL orally every 4 to 6 times a day to a maximum of 10 mL daily
