Benz-O-Sthetic is a local anaesthetic that contains 20% benzocaine and is primarily used as analgesic in the mouth and gum irritations. It acts by causing reversible absence of pain sensation by blocking sodium influx through sodium-specific ion channels in the neuronal cell membrane, thus leading to numbness of sensitive and painful areas.

Benz-O-Sthetic is used topically to treat localized pain from mouth and gum irritations e.g. canker sores. Canker sore is a painful and open sore in the mouth and hence Benz-O-Sthetic is recommended for use in patient with canker sores to reduce the pain.
Benz-O-Sthetic is also used before a medical or dental procedure due to its membrane stabilizing effect which aids to numb the mouth and the throat. Benz-O-Sthetic may also be used for other conditions other than the one mentioned in this article, and its use should be determined by your doctor. Benz-O-Sthetic uses can be summarized as follows;
- Local anesthesia
- pruritus and external burns.
Your doctor will determine Benz-O-Sthetic dosage depending on a number of factors such as the severity of the condition, and response to therapy. Stick to the Benz-O-Sthetic dose as directed by the doctor and never alter the dosage plan unless authorized by the doctor.
Topical Benz-O-Sthetic is available in many dosage forms meant for specific conditions e.g.
- Rectal ointment is applied externally for treatment of hemorrhoids for up to 6 times a day.
- Benz-O-Sthetic topical gel is applied to areas with sunburn up to 4 times daily.
- Topical oral lozenges for treatment of sore throat pain, and mouth pain – 1 lozenge dissolved in mouth every 2 hours.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for the next dosing plan. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
Benz-O-Sthetic Side Effects
All medications cause side effects, but some patients may not experience them. Also, the acuteness of the side effects may be different from one patient to the other. Contact your doctor if any the following common side effects are persistent or don’t go away.
- Mild headache
- Nasal congestion
Call your doctor immediately if you experience the following severe side effects while taking Benz-O-Sthetic:
- Worsening pain.
- Hypersensitivity reactions such as, hives, pruritus, chest tightness, labored breathing.
