Artane is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Artane is also used to treat involuntary movements associated with side effects of using certain psychiatric drugs such as chlorpromazine or haloperidol. Artane belongs to a class of drugs known anticholinergics and is only available through a doctor’s prescription. Artane may also be used to treat other conditions not listed in this medication guide.

Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder that is associated with inability to walk, stiff muscles and a general sense of weakness. Some people may notice tremor of the hands or head. The Parkinson’s disease progresses gradually with the symptoms worsening with time.
Typical symptoms of the disease include reduced facial expression, slurred speech, decreased eye blinking and slowness of voluntary movements particularly with the initiation of movements such as rolling over in bed or walking.
Artane works by blocking the activities of a certain substance that occurs naturally in the body known as acetylcholine. Artane is indicated for:

Artane dosage is determined by the doctor. The dose may vary from one patient to the other depending on the body’s ability to tolerate the effects of the drug. The doctor may use factors such as the patient’s weight, height, age and sex as well a response to treatment to determine the Artane dose. The amount of Artane to be administered depends on the strength of the drug.
- 6 to 10 mg/day in 3 to 4 divided doses; doses of 12 to 15 mg/day may be required
In case you miss a Artane dose, use it at the next available opportunity. However, if it is about time for the second dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the normal schedule.
Artane Side Effects
Artane may cause some side effects just like any other drug. The severity of the side effects may differ from one person to the other. Be sure to contact your doctor if the following common side effects don’t go away or get worse.
- Dry mouth
Stop taking Artane and contact your doctor immediately if the following SEVERE side effects occur
- Changes in vision
- Blue colored fingers or toes
- Pressure in the jaw or neck
- Tightness of the chest
- Bloody diarrhea
