Altarussin DM is a prescription drug that treats coughs and clears chest congestions. It is a combination of guaifenesin and dextromethorphan. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that breaks and loosens congestions in the chest and throat making it easy to cough through the mouth while Dextromethorphan reduces the cough by suppressing the brain signals that trigger coughing.

Altarussin DM Uses
Altarussin DM is used to cure a variety of cold related illnesses but it is most effective in clearing out chest congestions and compressing coughs. It is classified under the expectorant class of drugs. Its two main components work by breaking the mucus accumulation on the chest and throat cavities making easing breathing and coughing. The drug also affects the brain centers and suppresses them and in effect reduces the urge to cough.
The drug has been tested and is safe for use by most persons above the age of two years under the prescription of a doctor. The drug however cannot treat illnesses caused by smoking or those that are a symptom of more serious illnesses such as asthma and emphysema.
Altarussin DM Dosage
It is highly recommended that the drug be taken according to the doctor’s prescription. It should also be taken with a lot of fluids to ease break down the mucus. For those who take the drug as a self-medication, the drug can be used in the following rations:
- Children above 12 years and adults: Take two teaspoonful of Altarussin DM every four hours.
- Children between 6-12 years: Take half a teaspoonful of Altarussin DM every four hours.
- Children between two and six years: Take half teaspoonful of altarussin DM every for hours.
- For children below two years and expectant mothers the drug should only be taken according to doctor’s prescription.
Altarussin DM Side Effects
Some of the side effects of Altarussin DM include dizziness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. These may persist for the first few days as your body adjusts to the new medication. They are common to first time users of the drug and are tolerable compared to the benefits of the drug. These are expected suppress in the first seven days of the medication failure to which one should consult a doctor.
- Rare side effects of the drug include trouble breathing, skin rash, and swelling and are a result of an allergic reaction of the body to the drug.
Altarussin DM Interactions
The interaction of Altarussin DM with other drugs cannot be quantified with a standard measure across the board with all individuals due to the many variables such as immunity that have to be put into consideration.
