Alginic Acid Uses

Alginic acid is actually not a medicine. However, its ability to resist digestion, metabolism, and absorption by the small intestine has enabled it to be used as a coating for other drugs that are susceptible to digestion. It is used to form a foam barrier around drugs such as Gaviscon liquid. When combined with magnesium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide, the carbohydrate is used to form antacids.

Alginic acid combinations are used in treatment of:

  • Stomach ulcers
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Sour stomach
  • Acid indigestion
  • Heartburn

Alginic Acid Dosage

As a component of other drugs, the dosage of Alginic acid varies depending on each drug. It is important to note that Alginic acid on its own cannot be used as a drug. The carbohydrate cannot be digested nor absorbed by the small intestine. The medications should be taken by mouth either before meals or just before going to bed. The exact dosage may vary depending on age and condition of an individual.

Tips with Alginic acid dosage for Gaviscon liquid:

  • Always shake the bottle well before using the medication. Use measuring device or tea spoons to measure your dosage as indicated on the bottle of the medicine
  • Refrigerate the medication to improve taste (never freeze it)
  • For tablets, always make sure you thoroughly chew before swallowing

Never miss your dosage. Any missed dosage should be taken immediately followed by taking some food. If the next dosage time is almost due, skip the missed dosage and continue with normal dosage schedule.
