Adrucil, also referred to as fluorouracil, is an antimetabolite that works by interfering with the production of proteins essential for cell growth and reproduction. It exerts its anti-cancer effect by preventing the synthesis of RNA and DNA in the cell by decreasing thymine (a nucleotide that is a building block of DNA). Lack of DNA and RNA helps prevent the cancer cell from further reproducing or making important proteins, which may result in death of cells. This way, Adrucil slows the growth of cancer cells in your body.
